One of the main “obstacles to inner work and spiritual realization is the painful and difficult one of the inner critic, the coercive agency within us that criticizes, judges, compares, condemns, blames, and attacks us and others mercilessly and constantly. … The superego becomes one of the main sources of inner suffering …”
With the right understanding and methodology, we “can recognize it for what it is, address it in ways that liberate us from its cruel inner attacks, and henceforth journey inwards with greater freedom and more enjoyment of the thrill of discovery.A.H. Almaas (Foreword to Byron Brown’s Soul Without Shame)
In this 90-Day Challenge, organised by Shekib, a Ridhwan students for fellow students, we dedicate our focus and attention to the inner critic for a prolonged period of time. The aim is to develop more sensitivity and skill around recognising and dealing with our superego more effectively, which is the work of a lifetime. Regardless of where you are in your personal journey, this will be a rewarding experience for anyone who decides to take on the challenge.
The entire challenge is text-based and will take place on Signal – a messenger similar to WhatsApp, but with a better track record at privacy and data protection
📆 Starting on Mon, 21 Apr and then for the following 90 days, there will be a short teaching and exercise daily.
Both will be around some relevant aspect concerning the topic at hand (eg. “signs of a SE attack,” “function of the SE,” “ways of defending against the SE” etc).
Once the daily teaching and exercise have been posted, participants are welcome and encouraged to share themselves with the entire group – if they like. This could look something like “My most common SE statements are XYZ,” “When my SE attacks me, I feel XYZ,” “My SE stops me from XYZ” etc.
Expressing our individual truths, recognising that everyone else has a SE too, meeting our SE attacks eye-to-eye, bringing into the light that which we usually lock away in shame … and doing all of this in a non-judgemental community of like-minded and supportive fellow travellers are only some of the benefits of engaging with this work.
FYI, the 90-Day Superego Challenge is closely based on Unfolding The Soul by Rhea Powers, which itself was inspired by Diamond Approach teacher Byron Brown’s Soul Without Shame.
